B. King in 1982 and 1983 helped establish the University of Mississippi’s Blues Archive. In recognition of the 100th anniversary of B. B. King’s birth and the recent celebration of the Blues Archive’s 40th birthday, this presentation focuses on the B. B. King Collection at the University of Mississippi’s Blues Archive. In addition to photographs, posters, memorabilia, and more, the core of this collection includes almost 10,000 audio recordings (LPs, 78s, 45s, and even wax cylinders) of not only King’s recordings, but of artists he enjoyed. In addition to the obvious blues and jazz records, many are surprised to see genres from country to classical, comedy to foreign language courses, and much more. This talk will also be tailored to this year’s ARSC conference by looking at the Blues Boys Kingdom record label King founded in Memphis in 1956.
