Now, as the center celebrates the end of that centennial year, MIRS’s unprocessed backlog has been reduced by close to a third, two successful program series highlight both its moving image and recorded sound collections, and its public service has dramatically increased. The path to this point has spanned multiple grants from the Mellon Foundation, as well as a decade of collaboration—sometimes contentious—within NYPL. Through a process that has involved scattered inventories within the division, to system-wide accessioning projects with and without a singular focus on this repository, to third party mass digitization, most of the division’s special collections have been digitized, and more than 140 collections (comprising 12,000+ items) have been described at the item level, some having been made whole after previous fragmentation.

This presentation will explore one set of efforts toward addressing a backlog of unprocessed AMI collections, and the benefits and challenges of centralization within large multi-repository archives.
