Malone released early recordings by bluesmen John Lee Hooker and Baby Boy Warren, R\u0026amp;B singer Bobbe Caston, jazz bassist Milt Hinton, and the Red Miller Trio, whose Staff recording of “Bewildered,” leased to Bullet for nationwide distribution, hit #1 on the Billboard R\u0026amp;B charts. By 1960, Malone had shifted Staff’s business model to a company that primarily produced vanity recordings for African American gospel singers, musicians, church choirs, and preachers nationwide.
