This paper focuses on the role of mediating technologies for the sound of popular music. Of particular interest is the possibilities and constraints of digital media used in contemporary music production. Using various recorded songs from the last twenty years of popular music history as point of departure, the presentation aims at demonstrating how contemporary digital technology influences popular music sound.
