The mission of Advance was to present American new music played by young virtuoso performers specializing in avant garde works. In many ways, Childs’s vision was to provide an alternative to CRI, which tended to record more established composers primarily on the East Coast. In contrast, Advance featured composers and performers from the Midwest and West Coast outside mainstream avant garde circles. Many of the performers were still in their twenties when they recorded for Advance such as Daniel Kobialka (violin), Phillip Rehfeldt (clarinet), and William Albright (piano). An impressive selection of composers recorded on Advance including Henry Brant, Donald Martino, Ben Johnston, Kenneth Gaburo, William Sydeman, Robert Ashley, Harold Budd, Salvatore Martirano, and many others, even though just over thirty albums have been released to date. Advance Recordings recognized important composers early in their careers and presented works that otherwise would not have been available on record for many years.
