When Striker died of a heart attack in 1974, he’d amassed thousands of 78s, LPs, and tapes, all of which were donated to the New York Public Library’s Archives of Recorded Sound. Curator David Hall inventoried the tapes, and they remained in order on the library’s shelves for 40 years. Then, a 2017 post to the ARSC listserv led NYPL staff to revisit Hall’s inventory, initially to locate a recording made by engineer Richard Alderson of Bob Dylan’s performance at the Gaslight nightclub. In addition to this tape, several others made by Alderson of 1960s jazz and folk luminaries were found in the Institute of Sound collection. In 2023, two John Coltrane tapes from this batch were released by Verve/Impulse records, as Evenings at the Gate. This presentation tells the story of the Institute of Sound, the likely story of how Alderson’s cache of tapes ended up at the NYPL, and how they were identified as unique, unreleased recordings.
