Cultural properties reflect the time of their creation, but values and tastes change. Popularity diminishes, and people don’t get the jokes anymore. Humor can be controversial, edgy and threaten established order. People make fun of themselves and their own culture as well as the Other. Some of the specific genres include: Coon Songs, Minstrel Shows, Rube and Ethnic humor, Race and Racist humor, Political satire, Party Records and sexual double entendre. Very few of these recordings could be played now for a general audience without detailed explanatory commentary. Many of these recordings had high popularity, but collectors value rarity over common. These recordings rarely make their way into collections because of the perception that they are both insignificant swill and embarrassing.  If collected, how should these recordings be processed, catalogued, described and digitized?  What reparative description is needed while maintaining cultural relativity and sensitivity? Should there be limits or bans on access and use? As we reexamine and relitigate past behaviors, attitudes, and memorialization, what kinds of collections and repositories would welcome these recordings?  Few scholars have examined these kinds of materials with notable exceptions such as Tim Brooks, David Diehl and Dorothy Berry.
