In Oboler’s “Hate,” a Norwegian minister strangles a Nazi to death. Along the lines of that play, at a 1942 meeting of the Institute for Education By Radio, Oboler made an impassioned speech demanding hatred in American war propaganda on radio. His comments drew ardent praise and equally ardent condemnation from intellectuals and radio professionals. Not long after Oboler’s speech, NBC canceled Plays for Americans.
