The cost of out-sourcing or developing in house preservation programs is prohibitive and further complicated by a lack of published costing metrics and staffing models. The Department of Special Collections, Stanford University Libraries has just completed a one-year pilot program to begin the process of preserving its own audio collections while collecting data to design better and more cost effective preservation models.
