It largely reflected the interests of co-founder Dr. David Evans and, to a degree, his graduate students, myself included. Given Evans’ long-standing research focused on African American folk-based music, he conceived of the label largely as a vessel for documenting and promoting blues, gospel, and related forms on both 45rpm discs and albums. High Water Records focused on artists and genres important to their local communities with great hopes for radio airplay and enough sales to sustain the operation; aspirations that were greatly tempered by the realities of the music industry at the time. In this regard, High Water Records sought to straddle the line between a commercial and a documentary operation.
