The cultural and sonic development of chopped and screwed music, as well as Southern hip-hop music broadly, can be found throughout various sound recordings and ephemera at UH Libraries. Furthermore, the uniqueness of these sound recordings led to numerous Library of Congress subject headings and genre/form term proposals to more accurately describe the cultures and genres these materials exemplify. In 2022, the author sought to develop a sibling collection of musical “microgenres” directly inspired by chopped and screwed music. The result was the acquisition of several sound recordings, specifically vaporwave vinyl, CD’s, and cassette tapes, as well as a recording featuring slowed + reverb music. However, as institutional priorities shifted and streaming platforms consolidated, the future development of the collection became uncertain.
