Widely available programs such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity.ai are reshaping how we process data and sound and create text and pictures. \u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eThis panel, a first for ARSC, will survey current uses of AI by both professionals and those involved with recorded sound as an avocation. We will address issues including dealing with systemic biases, spotting inaccurate statements (“AI hallucinations”) and effective prompts to instruct AI programs how to proceed (“prompt engineering”), as well as broader issues of ethics and sustainability. The panel will be moderated by Tim Brooks, former ARSC president and chair of the ARSC Copyright and Fair Use Committee, a private scholar who has used GAI in a variety of research contexts. Panelists will include David Giovannoni, an advanced private collector who has used GAI to pull together research for the First Sounds initiative, David Seubert, curator of special collections at the University of California-Santa Barbara, who has been experimenting with using AI to import print discographies into the massive online Discography of American Historical Recordings (DAHR), and Jessica Thompson, an experienced sound restoration engineer who has used AI in her work.
