A digitized map of the carrier may be processed to repair damage and the stylus motion may be emulated numerically. In this way recordings may be recovered without contact to the media. Delicate or damaged samples may be digitally preserved with this approach. Efficient mass digitization is required to create broad access to recorded sound collections. An optical scanner is also a promising approach for access since it offloads the entire transcription process to software.
