Winner will present an evening of audio examples of source material, including items in his personal collection, that he has either remastered or preserved, for the purpose of examining correct methods to retrieve such documents from media as diverse as pressings, metal parts, lacquer discs, original tapes and, in a number of instances, surviving tape copies from lacquer discs which otherwise have been lost. Featured artists to include Arturo Toscanini (naturally!), Dimitri Mitropoulos, Oscar Levant, Giovanni Martinelli, Zinka Milanov, Lawrence Tibbett and Jussi Björling.\u003c/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eSeth B. Winner is currently engaged in a NARAS-sponsored conservation and preservation project concerning New York Philharmonic World War II-era broadcasts. He established Seth B. Winner Sound Studios in 1990. Among his previous remastering clients are the New York Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera, Sony Music, Pavilion Records, Ltd., Crystal and Universal Records. He has earned three Grammy Nominations and one honorable mention from NARAS. From 1996-2004, he was co-chair with Gary Galo of ARSC’s Technical Committee and a contributor to the CLIR Technical Report concerning analogue identification, conservation and preservation. Recent preservation and remastering projects have been undertaken for The Cy Walter Archives, the Bach Aria Group, the Princeton Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mark Laycock, the Schnabel Family Foundation, the Benny Carter and Benny Goodman Collections housed at Rutgers University’s Institute of Jazz Studies, and a 4-CD package devoted to Jussi Björling’s American radio broadcasts published by the American JB Society on the WHRA label, as well as the final issue by Bluebell Records in Sweden of a 2- CD set comprising the last known recordings of the great Swedish tenor to be issued commercially. Since 1989 he has remastered the critically acclaimed Vocal Record Collectors’ Society annual issues. Recently, he has remastered various studio and live recordings featuring pianist Nadia Reisenberg for the Bridge and Romeo labels. As a sound engineer at the New York Public Library for over 25 years, he has supervised the preservation of such collections as the Voice of America, the National Orchestral Association, the Little Orchestra Society, Roberta Peters, Henry Cowell, Vincent Persichetti, Otto Luening and Eubie Blake.
