Documentation has always played a crucial role in the Festival. Hundreds of regional and ethnic communities have been invited to share songs, performances, craft traditions, cooking techniques, oral histories, illustrations of occupational culture, and narratives about pertinent cultural issues—most of which have been captured in audio form. The Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage produces the Festival and serves as the repository for the archival documentation and recordings produced during the last fifty years of the event. Consisting of many thousands of hours of analog and born-digital audio recordings, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival Records collection spans the complete range of audio formats and stocks posing technical and preservation challenges for archivists. The purpose of this presentation is to share the strategies used to document intangible cultural heritage in a festival setting and how technical processes have changed over time. Workflows for carrying out the setup, capture, description, and management of digital audio files on a large scale will be discussed in detail.
