The chopped and screwed style hit the national stage in 2005 with the break-throughs of platinum rap artists Mike Jones, Paul Wall, and Chamillionaire. Started in 2010, the Houston Hip Hop Collection at the University of Houston Libraries is intended to document the city's hip hop scene, with an initial emphasis on DJ Screw. Materials being collected include audio recordings, video recordings, photographs, posters, and handwritten raps. The collection will support an undergraduate course on hip hop in 2011, and form the basis for a major exhibition and symposium in 2012.
