Rachel Chery traces the history of Haitian clandestine Radio during the Cold War, drawing on the Foreign Broadcast Information Service transcriptions of Creole broadcasts from Radio Havana and her interviews with Radio VonVon staff and listeners. She argues that Haitian exiles broadcasting from countries such as Cuba and the United States utilized music, rumor, and humor as forms of resistance against the Duvalier regime. Laura Wagner introduces the story of Radio Haïti-Inter and its archive, examining how the station employed techniques of mawonaj – dissembling and hiding in plain sight – to clandestinely resist the Duvalier regime and other anti-democratic governments. She describes efforts to digitally repatriate the Radio Haiti collection to the country that created it. That project has only been partially realized, largely because the same circumstances that Radio Haiti reported on and that ultimately forced the station to close are still ongoing. Sony Prosper keeps track of how three groups (i.e., archivists and information professionals who processed the archive, members of the Haitian diaspora who were affiliated with Radio Haiti, and archivists, information professionals, and cultural keepers in Haiti) view the repatriation and return of the Radio Haiti archive. He particularly focuses on the role the Haitian diaspora plays in such efforts, suggesting that a full understanding of return is incomplete without examining the role diasporic communities play in such efforts.
