C. Handy, the “Father of the Blues,” is heralded as the dean of the Memphis blues, the city’s blues scene was anchored by Will Shade. Taking inspiration from recordings by the Dixieland Jazz Blowers from Louisville, Shade put together a similar outfit, the Memphis Jug Band, the first in the city. Their music was influenced by the blues, rags, folk, and medicine show traditions from the nearby Mississippi and Tennessee. Shade mentored and directed a shifting lineup that at various points incorporated numerous local and regional players, including Memphis Minnie. New outfits quickly proliferated, including Cannon’s Jug Stompers, Jack Kelly’s South Memphis Jug Band, Jed Davenport and his Beale Street Jug Band, and the Beale Street Rounders, which were deeply integrated into Memphis society.
