It was at this time that Dr. Bensman began amassing audio recordings of radio programs from around the country. Done so to enhance the in-class experience of his students, Bensman defended the practice by noting the important historical value held within the collection, and he was not shy about providing and trading programs with lay persons, academics, and organizations such as the National Archives. Bensman built his collection that he ultimately donated to the University Libraries in 1976. The Libraries had made the collection available up until very recently. Despite this, the collection contains dozens of audio tapes that highlight life in Memphis at a specific time. From ads for cigarettes, to local sermons, Bensman sought to preserve and share pieces of Memphis history through sound. Overall, the collection houses over 1400 audio reels and cassette tapes that document the golden age of radio and beyond.
