Mercer came to Paris in 1944 to work at radio station KPLT, bought the local record store in 1945, and started his pressing plant in 1946. He pirated recordings by Atlantic, JVB, Cow Town, and Freedom. His most well-known 78 is \"Benzedrine Blues\" on his Royalty label which celebrates the powers of that easily gotten stimulant. The label abruptly ceased operations in 1949 when he plead guilty in federal court of selling obscene records across state lines and he moved his family to Chicago where he served his probation.
